"THIS IS WHO WE ARE NOW: #AERIEREAL

If there's one thing we're totally passionate about here at Seventeen, it's embracing body peace! Which is why we're completely obsessed with aerie's latest ad campaign, which features models lounging around in adorable undies as per usual—but this time, with no retouching whatsoever. Oh, and spoiler alert: They all still look totally gorgeous.

-"We wanted to offer our customer something different, a real experience," says Seguin. "We listened to our customers, whether on social media, in the stores or in focus groups, and we've heard them talk about body image and how hard it is to find a bra. That really helped us come to this point in the brand."
One look at the new ads and it's clear the models are still models. But at least they're real people and not digital Frankenbeauties. "We're not altering the girls in any way," says Seguin. "Nothing is covered up--tattoos, stretch marks, scars, freckles--what you see is what you get. We're not altering their bodies in any way. The product fits them as shown and no alteration to them at all."

While the idea of unretouched photos makes common sense--none of this should be news--Seguin says the biggest challenge of the change has been unlearning institutional bad habits. "If anything it was more of a mindset change," she says. "As a company and an industry we're just used to retouching a scar or covering a tattoo, and that might've been the hardest part. Making sure nothing was touched. The girls are beautiful on their own. It sounds hysterical for anyone not working in the business but that might've been the toughest part."

'

If the initial reaction--not to mention all the earned media--the brand has got from the ads is any indication, it hit a nerve that other marketers may be wise to tap themselves. "This represents the evolution of our brand so we'll continue to focus on it and talk to our customers in this way," says Seguin. "This is who we are now."

"I went into the [aerie] store today, and I was like agh!" one of the models, Amber Tolliver told Elle about the new campaign images. "I do like to see slight re-touchings on my flaws, sure, but the beauty of the Aerie campaign is that all of my flaws are out there." If even amazingly-stunning models are self-conscious about their so-called "flaws," it's definitely time for more totally-real campaigns like this one!

HOW-TO: GET ROSY CHEEKS

Too scared to give blusher a go? Don’t be! Blusher really is make-up’s unsung hero. As well as perking up skin and giving you a fresh and youthful glow, it cleverly contours your face too. So, if you’re feeling tempted to give it a try, just follow these easy steps…

Choosing the right blusher shade for your skin type and tone is the most important step in getting a good result. If you’ve got oily skin, opt for a powder blush like Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher, it’s an ultra-fine powder that comes with a handy in-built mirror. If you have normal or dry skin, try a cream formula instead like MUA Cream Blush in Lush as it will hydrate you as well as give you colour. For a subtle ‘pinch’ of colour, opt for a tint likeCheeky Kiss ‘N’ Tell Lip and Cheek Tint. Paler skin tones should go for soft pink shades, whilst peach and brown tones work best on dark skin.

If you’re still unsure which shade suits your skin tone, a good trick is to check the colour of the veins on your wrist to determine whether you have warm or cool undertones. If the veins on the inside of your wrist are blue, you have cool undertones – if they are green, you have warm undertones. As a general rule, pinky shades suit cool undertones and peaches and browns suit warm undertones.

Step-1
For powder blusher, use a blusher brush such as Revlon’s Blush Brush to dust the colour onto the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards towards the hairline. For cream blusher, apply with your fingertips to the same area and blend.
Step-2
Continue working the blusher back down slightly towards your ears, just to soften. Gradually build up intensity and blend well for a flawless, natural finish. Remember to apply sparingly!

Step-3
Smile to make the apples of your cheeks more prominent and apply a little pop of colour. Again, do so sparingly to avoid a doll-like look, you want your blush to look natural so that it enhances your natural colour.
Step-4
Finish the look with a highlighting product like L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Instant Radiance Enhancer for a healthy glow. Its clever lightweight gel formula is infused with pearl particles so it creates a luminous complexion without feeling greasy. Dab a little along the tops of cheekbones and blend with your fingertip.
